                                                                                                           April 2017

Dear Parents,

spring

It is April, and hopefully Mother Nature will provide us with some spring-like weather and sunshine!  Now that spring is here the temperatures are still not always very warm so please make sure that your children have proper coats and heavy sweatshirts to wear for outdoor rec.  The students also need rubber-soled shoes that attach securely to their feet and cover their feet completely if they want to use any of the outdoor equipment.

Our PARP (Parents as Reading Partners) Program with the theme of Starwars just ended. We starwars had wonderful participation from our students and their families.  We are awaiting the final results of our reading minutes.  We would also like to thank Mrs. Callan for putting together this program and tallying the minutes read. The students were provided with a variety of activities to earn points.  Again, the response to these activities was wonderful. I hope you were able to participate in the program and read with your child. It is very important for children to hear how good readers sound.  Reading opens up a world of wonder and excitement for our children.

read
Reading is a very important part of your child’s education. If you can read, you can do anything. The doors that open are limitless. A child’s ability to read will increase his/her vocabulary and background knowledge. Reading allows a child to experience different forms of writing and will give him/her ideas to sharpen his/her craft of writing. Our Common Core Standards also emphasize close reading of information text to gain knowledge.

The District Orchestra, Band, and Chorus Concerts will take place April 3rd, 4th and 6th.  Our music students put in many hours of hard work and many sessions of practice. Thank you to our boys and girls for their dedication; thank you, parents for your support; and thank you to our wonderful music teachers, Mrs.  Garner, Mr. Vollmer and Ms. DelGatto.

Our third, fourth and fifth grade students just completed the ELA Assessment last week.  The math assessment will be given during the first week in May.

Our English as a New Language Students will begin taking the speaking portion of the New York State English as a Second Language Assessment (NYSESLAT) beginning on April 17th.

On April 26th, Hicksville Middle School will hold an orientation for our fifth grade parents to provide general information as your child moves forward in his/her educational career.
