  • Students Celebrate Special Person's Day

    On Friday, March 17th, students and guests celebrated the 51st annual Special Person's Day in Burns Avenue School. It was a very exciting day as parents, grandparents, relatives, and friends came to the school so that they could visit students in their classrooms and participate in some educational activities together.

  • Fifth Graders and Teachers Compete in Annual Volleyball Match

    On Friday, March 3, students in Fifth Grade once again competed against the Burns Avenue teachers in the annual Faculty-Fifth Grade volleyball game. Mrs. Covelli's, Ms. Ficke's, and Mrs. Lombardi's classes took on the teachers in a number of exciting matches.

  • Students Read Across America to Honor Dr. Seuss

    To commemorate Dr. Seuss’s birthday, students in Burns Avenue participated in the Read Across America Program on Thursday, March 2nd. The Read Across America Program is designed to enhance literacy and increase student interest in reading.

  • Reading Ceremony Highlights Favorite Biographies

    On Friday, February 17th, Burns Avenue once again celebrated reading with the ninth annual Burnie Awards Ceremony. The ceremony involved the awarding of "Burnies" for the most popular biographies in the school. During the ceremony, students portrayed historical characters and famous scientists, inventors. and authors.

  • Students Celebrate the 100th Day of School

    Students in Kindergarten and First Grade had a great time celebrating the 100th day of school on Thursday, February 16th. During the day, the students participated in a number of activities that dealt with one hundred and the place value system.

  • Student Council Runs a "Souper Bowl" Food Drive

    In the weeks leading up to the Super Bowl, the students in Burns Avenue participated in their very own "Souper Bowl." As part of a program run by the Burns Avenue Student Council, students were asked to donate cans of soup for needy families.

  • Students Shine in the Winter Concert

    The Burns Avenue Winter Concert, which was held on Tuesday, January10th, included some wonderful performances by each of the school's musical groups. The audience filled the gymnasium and they were delighted with the performances of the Band, Orchestra, Third Grade Chorus, and Fourth/Fifth Grade Chorus.

  • Congratulations to the Winners of the Fire Department Poster Contest

    Congratulations are offered to the winners of this year's Hicksville Fire Department Fire Prevention Poster contest. As a result of their work, Christian, Emma, Hailey, Vladimir, and Lucas were invited to an awards ceremony at the Fire Department's Headquarters on Sunday, January 8th.

  • Fourth Grader Wins the Burns Avenue Spelling Bee

    On Friday, January 6th, twenty-five students in Grade 4 and Grade 5 participated in the annual Burns Avenue Spelling Bee. The students had been chosen based upon their performance in classroom competitions that had previously taken place.

  • Students Celebrate During a Holiday Program

    On Friday, December 23rd, students in Burns Avenue put on a holiday program that included singing and presentations about some of the holidays that they celebrate each year. Students also participated in a sing along and were accompanied by Mrs. Garner on the piano

  • Petitions for School Board Seats Available

    3 seats on the Hicksville School District Board of Education will be expiring on June 30th. Any Hicksville resident interested in running for the 3 year term may pick up a petition from the District Clerk on weekdays from 8:30-4:30 at the school district office. The deadline for returning petitions is April 17.  The New York State School Board Association has provided a document for prospective school board members outlining the Board members' responsibilities and the election process.  For more information, call the District Clerk at 516-733-2104.
